Theyre among the largest animals in the ocean. They look like small horns and have earned the genus the name 'devil ray' (also because of their size). Right in front of their eyes, they have two movable head fins. So it appears to have been invented as a marketing ploy in order to play on the fears of consumers and make more money. The giant oceanic manta ray, giant manta ray, or oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) is a species of ray in the family Mobulidae, and the largest type of ray in the world. Some theories have attributed the behaviour to mating rituals, communication and removal of parasites. Main Characteristics Giant oceanic manta rays belong to the Mobula family and are more commonly known as giant manta rays. Reaching widths of up to 29 feet (8.8 m), the manta rays are much larger than any. Interestingly this demand for gill-plates is only very new and though retailers claim to be reviving a traditional remedy, there is no evidence of it in traditional literature. The giant manta ray is the largest ray and one of the largest fishes in the world. In fact these days many large marine species such as Manta Rays are often found to have dangerously high levels of mercury and other toxic chemicals in their bodies due to bio-accumulation of pollution so consuming them could cause very serious health problems rather than cure them. The reason these are in demand is for use in Traditional Medicine it is claimed that they have medicinal properties and can heal anything: from asthma to heart disease, from chicken pox to cancer! However there is no scientific evidence to back up these claims. In 2009, scientists established that there are at least two distinct species of manta ray the giant oceanic manta (Mobula birostris), and the reef manta (Mobula alfredi). Gill plates or rakers are the bits in their gills used for filter feeding. In recent years a new industry has been created, catching Manta Rays for their gill plates. Female Manta Rays dont start reproducing until around 15 years of age, their gestation period is over a year, they give birth to one baby at a time and may not. This is probably the biggest threat to Manta Rays.
